Hindi to English grammar differences

If you speak Hindi, some English grammar rules will feel natural and others will feel confusing. These are the biggest differences to focus on first.

Word Order

Hindi is SOV โ€” the verb comes at the END of the sentence. 'Main aam khata hoon' literally means 'I mango eat'. In English this must become 'I eat a mango'. This reversal is the hardest adjustment Hindi speakers face.

Articles

Hindi has absolutely no articles. Learning when to use 'a', 'an', and 'the' is the single biggest grammar challenge for Hindi speakers learning English. There is no rule in Hindi to map this onto.

Verb System

Hindi verbs agree with both subject and object gender. English verbs only change for third person singular present tense โ€” a much simpler system once understood.
